‘Playa de Lobos’ Enjoys a Successful Screening in Fuerteventura Thanks to the Fuerteventura Film Commission
Yelmo Cineplex cinemas in Caleta de Fuste hosted two special screenings of Playa de Lobos, organised by the Fuerteventura Film Commission, attracting a strong audience response and bringing the film back to the island where it was shot.
Playa de Lobos is a comedy filmed entirely across various locations in Fuerteventura. The production involved 280 local extras and generated an estimated €1 million in economic impact for the island.
According to Nereida Calero, Councillor responsible for the Fuerteventura Film Commission, “these special screenings are intended to highlight the enormous potential that Fuerteventura has to attract investment and create employment within the audiovisual sector.”
She added that “through the work of the Fuerteventura Film Commission, we want to continue promoting this potential so that the island remains a preferred destination for audiovisual productions, contributing to economic diversification while remaining fully compatible with the protection of our territory and landscapes.”
The Deputy Minister of Culture of the Canary Islands Government, Horacio Umpiérrez, also highlighted the growing importance of the audiovisual industry throughout the archipelago.
“We are very pleased because this year we are likely to surpass last year’s figures, reaching almost 134 productions across the Canary Islands. Through Canary Islands Film, we continue working to strengthen a sector capable of responding to this growing demand.”
The event was also attended by representatives from island and municipal institutions.
The production received location support and coordination from the Fuerteventura Film Commission. Its main filming location was Playa de la Guirra in Caleta de Fuste (Antigua), while additional scenes were filmed along the Corralejo Dunes Road, Corralejo Harbour (La Oliva), Betancuria, and private locations in Tefía and Costa Calma.
For director Javier Veiga, the screenings held special significance.
“It is wonderful to have these special screenings in Fuerteventura, especially in a cinema located so close to the film’s main setting,” he explained. “The shoot was demanding, with many night-time scenes, but it was also a pleasure because the island gives the film a very distinctive character, something that critics have also highlighted.”
Playa de Lobos stars Dani Rovira, Marta Hazas, Antonia San Juan, and Javier Veiga himself.
The film is produced by Medio Limón, the production company founded by Marta Hazas and Javier Veiga, with a focus on creating original, author-driven stories with a distinctive voice.
Following the screenings, Javier Veiga and Marta Hazas took part in a discussion with the audience, sharing behind-the-scenes details about the production.
Speaking about the filming experience, Marta Hazas commented: “It was truly wonderful and incredibly enjoyable. The team did not even leave the island during weekends.”
Referring specifically to Caleta de Fuste, she added: “We chose this location because it was perfect. The beach bar where the entire story takes place was exactly what we had imagined when reading the script. It was the place we had pictured from the very beginning.”
The feature film tells the story of two completely different men who meet at sunset in a beach bar facing Lobos Islet.
Manu works at the beach bar, while Klaus is a tourist who refuses to leave the last sun lounger waiting to be packed away. At first glance, it appears to be a chance encounter between two men who have nothing in common and seem destined never to understand each other.
However, Manu gradually begins to suspect that Klaus is neither on that beach by coincidence nor the person he claims to be. As tensions between them escalate, Klaus presents Manu with a disturbing and unexpected proposal that changes everything.
