Director Víctor Moreno Wraps Filming of The Exterior, the First Dystopian Feature Produced by Womack Studios and KV Films
Starring Daniela Brown, this feature film blends intimate science fiction with adventure cinema and is scheduled for release in 2026. The story follows the journey of an astronaut lost in the desert.
The production has received support from the Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA), the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Tenerife, the Department of the Environment of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, and the municipalities of Puerto del Rosario and La Oliva.
Filming for The Exterior, the fiction feature debut of director Víctor Moreno (Tenerife, 1981), concluded this Friday in Fuerteventura. Since spring, the production team has been working across the island’s striking arid landscapes, which, together with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, serve as the setting for this dystopian story about an astronaut stranded in the desert.
Produced by Womack Studios and KV Films and starring Daniela Brown, the film centres on Ana, a space explorer living at a training base located in a remote and desolate area on Earth.
As part of her preparation for a possible mission to Mars, Ana must undergo an extended period of isolation. However, the intense physical and psychological demands of her training lead her deep into the desert, where she encounters a nomadic shepherd travelling with her goat.
Unable to communicate verbally, Ana attempts to find her way back to the base. The shepherd, however, senses that the astronaut is carrying unresolved emotional burdens. As she offers Ana food and water, she guides her into the depths of a cave to take part in a healing ritual that transforms the astronaut’s perception of her own planet and her connection to the cosmos.
Nominated for a Goya Award for Edificio España and winner of a Feroz Award for The Hidden City, Víctor Moreno also wrote the screenplay for The Exterior. The film explores themes such as loneliness, survival and humanity’s relationship with the natural world.
Balancing intimate science fiction with adventure storytelling, the film offers an ironic reflection on humanity’s desire to conquer the universe while often failing to appreciate and understand the world immediately around us.
According to Moreno, bringing The Exterior to life has been an extraordinary experience.
“After five years, being able to transform the story that lived in my imagination into images and sound has been incredibly rewarding. I have been fortunate to work with an outstanding technical and artistic team who fully committed themselves to the project. Shooting in chronological order allowed the protagonist’s journey to unfold naturally throughout the production process. It is something I would love to do again, as it benefits both the actors and the crew. Despite the inevitable challenges of filmmaking, I am extremely pleased with the result. We have a very special film on our hands.”
The cast also includes Rina Ota and Florentine Behrend.
The technical crew is composed predominantly of professionals from the Canary Islands, including Silvia Sánchez as Executive Producer, Pablo G. Gallego as Director of Photography, Luna Bengoechea as Production Designer, and Amanda Villavieja as Head of Sound.
Executive producer Silvia Sánchez, from Womack Studios, described the completion of filming as an emotional milestone.
“It is incredibly exciting to see how, after five years of hard work, we have turned this film into reality. We still have the post-production process ahead of us, but we are already very happy with the result. From the very beginning, we fell in love with a story that offers a different kind of science fiction, centred on two female protagonists and enriched by the Martian beauty of several locations across the Canary Islands.”
Catalan actress Daniela Brown previously starred in The Abbess (2024), directed by Antonio Chavarrías, and also played a key role in Marco (2024), directed by Aitor Arregi and Jon Garaño, which won two Goya Awards.
The spacecraft featured in the film was constructed on a purpose-built set at Videoreport Studios in Gran Canaria, where the scenes depicting the astronaut’s training before entering outer space were filmed.
Throughout its development, The Exterior participated in several prestigious international industry platforms, including Cinemart Rotterdam, Venice Gap Financing Market, MAFIZ (Málaga Film Festival), MECAS (Las Palmas International Film Festival) and Abycine, receiving awards at the latter two events. The project was also selected for the renowned Torino ScriptLab.
The Exterior is a production by Womack Studios and KV Films, with financial support from the Government of the Canary Islands, the ICAA, and the Cabildo of Tenerife, as well as collaboration from the Department of the Environment of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura and the municipalities of Puerto del Rosario and La Oliva.
