Fuerteventura Film Commission Launches Its First Book to Mark Its 10th Anniversary

The Fuerteventura Film Commission has presented Fuerteventura: An Island of Cinema, its first publication dedicated to highlighting and strengthening the island’s image as a natural film location.

According to Lola García, President of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, “the book celebrates not only Fuerteventura as a unique destination for film productions, but also the tenth anniversary of the Fuerteventura Film Commission.”

The publication offers an overview of some of the most significant productions filmed on the island while showcasing the wide variety of locations that Fuerteventura has to offer. It illustrates the island’s potential as a filming destination through its diverse landscapes, favourable climate, strategic geographical location and exceptional tax incentives.

According to Nereida Calero, Councillor responsible for the Fuerteventura Film Commission, “the book serves not only as a tribute to the past, present and future of filmmaking in Fuerteventura, but also as a promotional tool to continue positioning the island as a filming destination both nationally and internationally.”

She added that the publication is also “a tribute to all the professionals who have worked behind the scenes on more than one hundred productions filmed on the island over the last ten years.”

Designed and laid out by Lucena Bregel, the book features photography by Carlos de Saá and texts written by journalist Eloy Vera Sosa. Nereida Calero congratulated the authors, noting that “they have successfully created a cinematic perspective and assembled a diverse selection of locations that perfectly showcase what Fuerteventura can offer as a natural film set.”

For his part, Carlos de Saá expressed his gratitude for “the opportunity to capture the landscapes of Fuerteventura through these photographs and help filmmakers discover the extraordinary place in which we live.”

Fuerteventura’s journey as a filming destination began in the 1960s. In 1968, the British production company Hammer Films brought cameras and film crews to the island to shoot When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth, directed by Val Guest.

In 2013, Hollywood turned its attention to Fuerteventura when Ridley Scott selected the island as a filming location for Exodus. Since then, major studios including 20th Century Fox, Disney, Warner Bros. and Paramount have added Fuerteventura’s landscapes to their list of filming destinations.

The island has also hosted a wide range of Spanish and Canary Islands productions, including The Traveller, Rendir los Machos and La Lucha, which was filmed in Fuerteventura in 2024, among many others.
