The winners of the 12th edition of Cinedfest in Fuerteventura received their awards during a ceremony held at the Fuerteventura Island Auditorium.

The prizes were presented by Nereida Calero, Councillor responsible for the Fuerteventura Film Commission, alongside Adargoma Hernández, Councillor for Education and Youth. Also in attendance were councillors América Soto (Antigua), David Hernández (Tuineje) and Rosa Rodríguez (Puerto del Rosario), as well as senator Paloma Hernández and the Island Director of the General State Administration, María Jesús de la Cruz.

This marks the fourth consecutive year that the Fuerteventura Film Commission has collaborated with Cinedfest, the educational film festival that introduces students to audiovisual storytelling and filmmaking. A total of ten educational centres from the municipalities of Antigua, Puerto del Rosario and La Oliva participated in this year’s edition, submitting a total of 21 short films.

Over several weeks, participants received training covering all stages of audiovisual production, from concept development and screenwriting to pre-production, filming and editing. Following this initial training phase, students produced their own short films using equipment and resources provided by the Fuerteventura Film Commission.

According to Nereida Calero, “our goal at the Fuerteventura Film Commission is to nurture future audiovisual talent on the island through training opportunities. In this case, we are starting at an early age, and the participating students have consistently demonstrated a very high standard. This gala is a recognition of that effort.”

Cinedfest is an educational and cultural initiative created in the Canary Islands by filmmaker David Cánovas and composer Antonio Hernández. Cánovas explained that “schools are provided with highly valuable educational and training resources so that students and teachers can experience the full process of writing, producing, filming and editing a short film. Throughout the project, they receive mentoring and access to a script development laboratory that helps them strengthen their stories.”

He also highlighted that “the Fuerteventura Film Commission was a pioneer in acquiring technical equipment that educational centres can use free of charge whenever required.”
