Fuerteventura Hosts Javier Veiga’s Feature Film ‘Playa de Lobos’

Filming is taking place over a five-week period, involving 280 local extras and generating an estimated one million euros in economic impact for the island.

Since 26 August, Fuerteventura has been hosting the filming of the feature film Playa de Lobos. Directed by Javier Veiga, the production is being shot entirely on the island through to the end of September, with filming locations spread across the municipalities of Antigua, Pájara, Puerto del Rosario, La Oliva and Betancuria.

The five-week shoot employs 280 extras recruited through a casting process held on the island, incorporates members of Fuerteventura’s local technical crew, and is expected to generate approximately €1 million in direct investment for the island’s economy.

The film’s main location is Playa de la Guirra in Caleta de Fuste, within the municipality of Antigua. The set was visited by Lola García, President of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, Nereida Calero, Councillor responsible for the Fuerteventura Film Commission, and Agustín Rodríguez, Councillor of Antigua Town Council.

Additional filming locations include the Corralejo Dunes Road and Corralejo Harbour in La Oliva, the town of Betancuria, as well as private locations in Tefía and Costa Calma.

Like previous productions such as American Star and Solo, Playa de Lobos is being filmed entirely in Fuerteventura. According to Nereida Calero, the production has benefited from the support, advice and logistical coordination provided by the Fuerteventura Film Commission.

Calero added that “film productions represent a major opportunity for the diversification of the local economy, generating investment and employment in Fuerteventura, as Playa de Lobos is doing.” She continued: “This is why we remain committed to supporting the development of the audiovisual industry while ensuring full respect for our territory and landscapes, which are precisely what filmmakers seek when choosing Fuerteventura as a natural film set.”

Playa de Lobos is a co-production between Medio Limón, Zebra Producciones and EPOS.

The film tells the story of two completely different men who meet at sunset in a beach bar overlooking the Islote de Lobos. Manuel and Klaus — an Andalusian and an Argentine — have about as much in common as a traditional Málaga tavern and a Patagonian steakhouse.

Manuel works at the beach bar, while Klaus is a tourist who has no intention of leaving his sun lounger. From this seemingly trivial disagreement emerges the absurd conflict at the heart of the story: one man wants to finish work and go home to sleep, while the other simply wants one last beer and to remain lying beneath the moonlight.
