The feature film La Hojarasca, a one-hundred-percent Canary Islands production, will be screened at Odeon Cinemas in Puerto del Rosario from 12 to 18 July. Directed by Macu Machín, the film has already been released across almost all the islands of the archipelago and has become one of the most acclaimed Canary Islands productions of recent years.
Attending the premiere were Nereida Calero, Councillor responsible for the Fuerteventura Film Commission, Macu Machín, director of La Hojarasca, and cinematographer José Alayón, who is also the director of La Lucha, a feature film shot in Fuerteventura.
Nereida Calero highlighted the importance of supporting Canary Islands productions, “particularly in the case of a film that explores the traditions and customs of our islands while reinforcing the image of the Canary Islands as a cinematic destination.”
La Hojarasca received the Silver Biznaga Awards for Best Spanish Film and Best Director in the ZonaZine section of the Málaga Film Festival. It was also nominated for the Berlinale Documentary Award at the Berlin International Film Festival, among many other distinctions.
Produced by El Viaje Films, the film tells the story of three sisters who reunite in Puntagorda, on the island of La Palma, to divide a family inheritance. As they share memories and confront long-standing family tensions, old conflicts resurface. Everything changes, however, when the Tajogaite volcano suddenly erupts.
